King Amenemhat I
His mother was of Nubian origin, showed great interest in building in Nubia. He was a just and benevolent king, wise and decisive, who restored security, order, and tranquility to the land. He organized its internal affairs and endeared himself to the people through his construction projects. He focused on the Fayoum region to regulate irrigation and utilize Lake Moeris (Lake Qarun), although the credit for implementing irrigation projects in the Fayoum goes to Amenemhat III. He also exerted great effort in exploiting mines and quarries, and facilitating trade. He subdued the governors of the provinces with firmness and wisdom, retaining those who were most loyal and obedient to him. Through this wise policy, he was able to make them his assistants and supporters. As he grew older, he associated his son, “Senusret”, with him in running the affairs of the state. Amenemhat I ruled for about thirty years and passed away in 1961 BC. All the kings who followed him continued his policies, most notably his son “Senusret I”, until the reign of King “Senusret II”.
